Youth in Agriculture: Sherina Represents Us Well at Masterclasses on Voluntary Carbon Market

We’re thrilled to announce that Sherina, one of our dedicated young adults, represented our community exceptionally well at the recent masterclasses on the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) and its Climate Change Mitigation Potential. Organized by the Mediterranean Youth Task Force (MYTF) in collaboration with the Youth Skills Hub of the Education Track of the World Food Forum, these masterclasses aimed to deepen participants’ understanding and effective participation in the VCM.

The series of masterclasses covered a range of topics crucial for youth, including greenhouse gas emissions, carbon registries, standards and methodologies, carbon credits, nature-based climate solution projects, and the Paris Agreement. Facilitated by a diverse range of instructors, including MYTF members, renowned professors, international organization practitioners, and private sector professionals, each session provided valuable insights and practical tools.

Key skills honed throughout the masterclasses included understanding the VCM and Compliance Market, greenhouse gas accounting and verification, knowledge of carbon credits quality and integrity, familiarity with carbon registries, standards, and methodologies, application of VCM in nature-based Climate Solutions (NCS) and relation to the Paris Agreement, and basics of nature-based carbon project design.

The masterclasses, held virtually from January 16 to April 9, 2024, were structured to encourage active participation from youth participants, including students, activists, practitioners, and researchers. To receive a certificate of course completion, participants were required to attend at least five out of the first seven sessions and mandatorily attend session eight, where they could present their own ideas or projects on a pre-declared topic.

Sherina’s participation exemplifies the commitment of young adults in our community to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. We commend her dedication and look forward to seeing how she applies the knowledge and skills gained from these masterclasses to make a positive impact in agriculture and beyond.
