Trinidad and Tobago’s Rural Women Pioneering Gender Equality and Climate Justice at CSW68

The Network of Rural Women Producers Trinidad and Tobago (NRWPTT) proudly announces its pivotal role in advancing gender equality and climate justice at the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68). As part of the Generation Equality Forum’s “55 Stories of Change,” NRWPTT stands at the forefront, exemplifying the transformative power of grassroots collaboration and commitment to inclusive development.

In the midst of global discussions on the disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis on women and girls, NRWPTT emphasizes the interconnectedness of all Generation Equality action coalition thematic areas. Their engagement spans various initiatives, with a primary focus on the Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Action Coalitions.

“None can be left out if we are to succeed with our ongoing focus on gender equality,” remarks the President of NRWPTT, Gia Gaspard-Taylor. “Our commitment began long before the forums, grounded in the belief that gender equality is fundamental to sustainable development.”

Despite uncertain funding, NRWPTT’s dedication remained unwavering. Leveraging partnerships and resources, they pioneered innovative projects aimed at empowering women and girls across Trinidad and Tobago. Through initiatives like skills training in sustainable agriculture, product development, and technology, NRWPTT equipped women with the tools to thrive amidst environmental challenges.

One of NRWPTT’s key initiatives focuses on establishing sustainable community gardens and building climate-resilient food resources. By providing women with the means to generate income and sustain themselves, NRWPTT addresses the intersectionality of gender, climate, and economic empowerment.

Collaboration has been central to NRWPTT’s success. Partnering with governmental and non-governmental entities, they amplify their impact and reach, fostering dialogue and action on climate resilience and gender equality. Their partnership with the University of the West Indies and local municipalities underscores the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in driving sustainable change.

As NRWPTT continues to champion gender equality and climate justice, they invite stakeholders and allies to join them in their mission towards a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
